OUR INSPIRATION
Juanita Norwood Mikell
Juanita’s Heart is inspired by the late Juanita Norwood Mikell. Juanita was a loving, mother of three children, and an adopted mother to many young girls. Her greatest accomplishments in life include her love of God and her love of people. Her love for people was demonstrated through her many acts of kindness and benevolence shown to those with any type of need. Juanita was always and advocate of empowering young adults and children. She believed that education was important in creating social change. Juanita found a special love for single mothers. Juanita became an advocate for these women,
providing resources and encouragement for them. She was a lighthouse and a place of comfort for women in despair. Juanita served her community and was an ambassador for united way. Juanita’s Heart strives to embody the many wonderful qualities of Juanita, in its many programs and continue her legacy of promoting social change.
Early Years
Juanita Norwood Mikell was born April 13, 1954 in Jonesboro, Georgia. She was the third of ten children born to the union of Wilbert Edward and Sarah Norwood. Her brothers and sisters would describe her as loving, kind and full of life. Juanita attend Jonesboro Senior High School and graduated in 1972.
EDUCATION AND CAREER
Juanita believed in education. She believed that it was the key to creating social change. After High School Juanita attended Clayton State College. She holds an associates degree in Business Administration. Upon completing that program Juanita also attended Atlanta Area Technical School and received a certification in Secretarial Science. This education open the door for career opportunities in local city government. Juanita worked for the City of East Point and City of Savannah for a total of 23 years.
